The Mother Load: Supporting Clients Through the Mental Weight of Matrescence

Presenter: Maria Fakhouri, Psy.D.

Wednesday October 1st   9am-11am (CST) Webinar

The transition to motherhood—known as matrescence—is a profound developmental and relational shift that is often overlooked in clinical training. Rooted in feminist theory, developmental psychology, and social justice-informed care, this course offers mental health clinicians a framework for understanding the psychological complexity of becoming a mother in a world that often romanticizes or pathologizes the experience.

Participants will explore identity renegotiation, emotional complexity, and systemic pressures of matrescence. The course provides evidence-based tools for recognizing perinatal mental health challenges, validating maternal ambivalence, and offering compassionate, culturally responsive support. Through a relational lens, this course also highlights the power of the therapeutic relationship as a space to hold, validate, and reflect the often-silenced experiences of new motherhood.

Getting Unstuck: A Dynamic, Relational and Reflective approach to moments of stagnation in long term therapy.

Presenters: Chandan Bhagia, Psy.D. AND Anmol Satiani, Ph.D.

Wednesday, November 5th   9am-11am (CST) Webinar

Therapists engaged in long-term treatment often encounter challenges when working with clients who remain “stuck” for extended periods. Persistent depressive and anxious symptoms, entrenched maladaptive interpersonal patterns, and a perceived lack of engagement in therapy can evoke feelings of frustration, confusion, and helplessness in clinicians. These dynamics may leave therapists struggling to conceptualize the client’s internal world and to identify effective interventions—ultimately leading to feelings of disheartenment and disengagement from the therapeutic process.

This presentation will explore these states of stuckness through both psychodynamic and relational lenses, offering clinicians deeper insight and practical strategies for navigating and working through such impasses. In addition to examining the internal experiences that may underlie clients’ stuckness, the presentation will invite reflective dialogue around therapists’ own values, expectations, and emotional responses within the therapeutic relationship—fostering a more nuanced and compassionate approach to these challenging clinical moments.

The presentation will include both theoretical frameworks and clinical case material to illustrate the complexity of these presentations and provide tangible examples of how such dynamics unfold in practice.
