We’re in a day and age where it’s important to stay informed but can feel overwhelming to try and keep up. With the ever complicated and changing world, it can feel impossible to find a way to create separation. Practicing mindfulness can be a way to not only take a break but also allows you to check in with yourself and how you are feeling.
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is a practice that focuses on bringing more awareness to the present moment, through identifying different thoughts, feelings, and physical reactions. It aims to create a space where you can observe your thoughts and experiences in a nonjudgemental way. Since mindfulness is a practice, there isn’t one right way to be mindful, and it can help adapt your own practice to your life.
Mindfulness in Practice
While the most commonly thought of way to practice mindfulness is through meditation, you can adapt mindful practice to many different situations. Below are a few examples of ways to practice mindfulness.
Mindfulness Meditation
Mindfulness meditation is a way to bring focus to your thoughts, feelings, and experience of the current moment. Finding a comfortable place and posture can make it easier to give your mind the space to wander.
Try to focus on what thoughts and feelings are coming up for you.
As thoughts arise, identify any themes that may come up, or if anything is particularly interesting to you.
Remember, your thoughts are just that, thoughts, and should be approached with curiosity and not self judgment. While being with your thoughts may come easy for some, guided meditations can also be helpful when needing more guidance on where to start.
Mindful Moments
Mindfulness practice does not only have to be limited to meditation. Other moments in life, especially if you have a more packed schedule, can be another way to practice.
Mindful eating is a practice that brings more attention to the experience of eating. This can be done through noticing the different flavors, textures, and temperatures of what you are eating.
Mindfulness during walks can also be a great way to bring yourself into the present moment. Try listening to the sounds of nature, notice the sensation of your feet hitting the ground with each step, and the feeling of the wind on your skin.
Carrying Mindfulness with You
There can be many different ways to make mindful moments in parts of your life. When finding different situations to practice mindfulness in, nearly any situation can fit. Regardless of when and where, try to bring awareness to your thoughts, the sensations of your body, and the environment around you.
