"If one's goal is self-recovery, to be well in one's soul, honestly and realistically confronting lovelessness is part of the healing process." - Bell Hooks
As a psychotherapist, I bring extensive clinical experience working with clients of all ages who have faced various forms of racial trauma, particularly within Black and immigrant-of-color communities. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to provide therapy in both individual and collective settings, including but not limited to colleges and universities, a level-one trauma center, IOP/PHP programs, and private practice. Guided by a holistic and integrative approach, I view the mind, body, and spirit as interconnected, recognizing the profound impact they have on our well-being and relationship to the world.
I am deeply committed to the notion that our environment often fails to provide the conducive spaces we need to thrive as individuals, and therefore, we must actively work towards reconstructing our society to better serve our human needs. Grounded in the traditions of mental wellness and social justice, I am convinced that our healing is not only essential for a better life but also for building a more just and equitable society. In therapy, I believe that cultivating a non-judgmental space is paramount to fostering healing and growth. Additionally, regaining control over our breath and body plays an integral role in therapeutic progress. Our breath and body can serve as anchors to the present moment, allowing us to cultivate self-awareness, resilience, and empowerment. By nurturing this non-judgmental space and reclaiming control of our breath and body, we pave the way for profound therapeutic progress.
Within my practice, I draw upon a range of therapeutic modalities tailored to meet each individual's unique needs. These modalities include relational psychodynamic therapy, Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Somatic Therapy, and Trauma-informed Therapy and Practice. While drawing from this array of modalities, I primarily focus on the relational psychodynamic approach. This approach delves into clients' relational history and uncovers the unconscious barriers that may impact their present experiences. By exploring the patterns and dynamics of their relationships, we gain valuable insight into the underlying factors contributing to their current challenges. This deeper understanding fosters personal growth and facilitates the development of healthier and more fulfilling relationships. These practices serve to alleviate suffering, reduce stress, and mitigate anxiety, fostering positive self-awareness and personal growth for individuals from diverse backgrounds. Through the integration of these therapeutic approaches, my goal is to create a comprehensive and personalized therapeutic experience that promotes healing, self-discovery, and growth.
Outside of my professional work, I hold a personal connection to my journey as I arrived in the United States as a refugee from Somalia in 1996. In my leisure time, I enjoy reading, watching comedies, yoga, and trying new recipes in the kitchen. I am excited to embark on this transformative journey with you by offering a warm and inviting space where you can heal, grow, and create the life you deserve.
